Things Change
It has been quiet around here. As we prepared for and executed our relocation to the West Coast, there just wasn’t enough time in the day to find time to sit down and sift through hundred of pictures — much less edit, post and write in the blog. However, today was the first day since we made the decision to move that I actually felt like I had the time to do anything other than plan, pack or unpack. As soon as I realized there was some extra time, I went to pull out my computer to start sifting.
As I went back through some prior edits and the most recent posts, I recognized I’d posted a lot of darker shots, so my intent going into today’s search was to find a daytime photo of something NOT Magic Kingdom. In spite of my better efforts to brighten things up a bit, it was the original of this photo that stuck out to me and, even after originally moving on in an effort to stay on task, I kept finding myself coming back.
This shot was taken during one of the most recent Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Parties while the Cinderella Castle projections were changing from “after hours blue” to a Christmas theme (or visa versa). You can almost feel the transition in this photo, where one facade is giving away to another, but no clear sense of which one is waxing and which is waning. If you look closely, you can see the projected paper tinsel coming in to view, and even the smallest hint of a red bow and other holiday decor.
With the proverbial paint still drying on my cross-country move, it makes sense that I was drawn to this photo, and as I began to edit the photo I recognized the clear view of some of the special adornments given to Cinderella Castle as part of the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary Celebration (i.e. the ribbons around the turrets and the jeweled bunting). I quickly remembered that the 50th Anniversary Celebration is coming to a close, and even those elements might not be there the next time I see the castle, adding another layer of transience to the shot.
With all of that in mind, I tried to emphasize the transitional features in the edit — the projections, the 50th Anniversary decorations, and even the fog as it was amplified by the light from the projections — somehow feeling that this photo illustrated some of the excitement and discomfort I’d been feeling over these last few months. I think this may be one of my new favorites.
With that…here is to being able to blog again — and here’s to change!
